Overview

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the world's second largest general-purpose resin. As early as 1835, French chemist Regnault discovered that vinyl chloride polymerizes into a white solid under sunlight. In 1914, chemists discovered that organic peroxides can accelerate the polymerization reaction of vinyl chloride. The use of emulsion polymerization has made the production of polyvinyl chloride industrialized. Emulsion polymerization is to disperse vinyl chloride monomer and water evenly in water with sodium alkyl sulfonate (surfactant) as an emulsifier to form an emulsion, and then use potassium persulfate or ammonium persulfate as an initiator to polymerize vinyl chloride into polyvinyl chloride.

Physical and chemical properties

Polyvinyl chloride, referred to as PVC, is one of the earliest industrialized plastic varieties. Its current output ranks second only to polyethylene. Polyvinyl chloride has been widely used in industry, agriculture and daily life. Polyvinyl chloride is a polymer compound formed by the polymerization of vinyl chloride. It is thermoplastic. White or light yellow powder. Relative density 1.35-1.40. Chlorine content 56%-58%. Melting point is about 70-85℃. It can be dissolved in or swollen by ketones, esters, tetrahydrofuran and chlorinated hydrocarbons. It has excellent chemical corrosion resistance. It has poor thermal stability and light resistance. It begins to decompose hydrogen chloride above 100℃ or exposed to sunlight for a long time. Stabilizers need to be added when making plastics. It has excellent electrical insulation and will not burn. It is used to make plastics, coatings and synthetic fibers. Depending on the amount of plasticizer added, soft and hard plastics can be made. The former can be used to make transparent films (such as raincoats, tablecloths, packaging materials, agricultural films, etc.), artificial leather, foam plastics and wire sheaths, etc. The latter can be used to make plates, pipes, valves, doors and windows, etc. The suspension polymerization method can obtain powdered resin. The emulsion polymerization method can obtain paste resin. Both can be used to make soft or hard plastics.

Application fields

The application of polyvinyl chloride is extremely wide, from building materials to automobile manufacturing, children's toys, from industrial and agricultural products to daily necessities, involving all walks of life and all aspects. For example, it can be used for electrical insulation materials, such as the insulation layer of wires, which has almost completely replaced rubber. It can be used as heat-resistant wires for electrical appliances, bushings for wires and cables, etc.; in automobiles, it can be used as steering wheels, top covers, cushions, etc.; in construction, it can be used as various profiles, such as tubes, rods, profiles, door and window frames, interior decoration materials, sewer pipes, etc.; as chemical equipment, it can be processed into various chemical-resistant pipes, containers and anti-corrosion materials. Soft polyvinyl chloride can also be made into various tubes, films, sheets and other products with toughness and flex resistance, which can be used to make packaging materials, rain gear, agricultural films, etc. Polyvinyl chloride paste can be applied to cotton cloth and paper. When heated at 140-145°C, it quickly gels and forms a film, which is then pressed by rollers to form artificial leather, which can be made into various products. PVC foam is also commonly used as padding, slippers, and thermal and sound insulation materials.
