Ethyl Formate (CAS 109-94-4): The Low-Residue Fumigant and Specialty Solvent

Date:2026-11-05View:3 Times

Ethyl formate (CAS 109-94-4) is a volatile, flammable ester formed from ethanol and formic acid, used primarily as a post-harvest fumigant and as a specialty solvent in coatings and flavor formulations. It carries GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) status as a food flavoring agent and is widely viewed as a lower-residue alternative to methyl bromide for commodity fumigation.

Why Is Ethyl Formate Used as a Fumigant?

Ethyl formate has a long history as a stored-product fumigant for dried fruits, cereals, tobacco, and packaged foods, and is used in large volumes for the treatment of dried grapes. Its core advantage is speed and residue behavior: it works quickly for rapid disinfestation, then hydrolyzes back into formic acid and ethanol — both naturally occurring compounds — so it does not persist on treated commodities.

For this reason, ethyl formate is being actively investigated as a replacement for methyl bromide, an ozone-depleting fumigant under phase-out under the Montreal Protocol. In commercial fumigation, it is blended with carbon dioxide at 16.7% by weight to suppress its flammability.

What Are the Industrial and Food Uses of Ethyl Formate?

Solvent. Ethyl formate dissolves cellulose nitrate, cellulose acetate, greases, and oils, and serves as an acetone substitute in selected formulations.

Flavor and fragrance. It is a GRAS food additive (FEMA 2434) used to build rum, arrac, lemonade, apricot, peach, pineapple, and mixed-fruit essences, and appears in beverages, ice cream, chewing gum, and confectionery.

Chemical intermediate. Ethyl formate is used in organic synthesis for formylation reactions, including the preparation of N-formyl derivatives and aldehydes via formylation–decarboxylation sequences.

Is Ethyl Formate Hazardous to Handle?

Yes — flammability is the dominant hazard. Ethyl formate is classified as a highly flammable liquid and vapor (UN Hazard Class 3, Packing Group II); its flash point of −20 °C means it can ignite under almost all ambient conditions, and vapor/air mixtures are explosive.

Health hazards are moderate but real: it is harmful if swallowed, causes serious eye irritation and respiratory irritation, and may cause drowsiness or dizziness at elevated exposure. The NIOSH REL is 100 ppm (300 mg/m³) TWA.

Essential controls: keep away from open flames, sparks, and hot surfaces; use explosion-proof electrical equipment and closed systems with ventilation; ground and bond containers to prevent static buildup; wear protective gloves, goggles, and face protection; store in a fireproof, cool area separated from strong oxidants.

What Is the Market Outlook for Ethyl Formate?

The global ethyl formate market is projected to grow at a CAGR of approximately 5.0%, rising from US$1.663 billion in 2025 to US$2.126 billion by 2030. Growth is being pulled by demand from the paint and coatings industry, expanding food and beverage applications (flavoring and fumigation), and regulatory pressure to replace methyl bromide in post-harvest pest control. The Asia-Pacific region, led by China, India, and Japan, is a key consumption and production base.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ethyl formate the same as ethyl acetate?
No. Ethyl formate is the ester of formic acid (C₃H₆O₂, MW 74.08), while ethyl acetate is the ester of acetic acid (C₄H₈O₂, MW 88.11). Ethyl formate is more volatile and more flammable, with a lower flash point.

Is ethyl formate safe for food contact?
Food-grade ethyl formate holds GRAS status and is approved as a flavoring agent. As a fumigant, it is valued because it decomposes into naturally occurring formic acid and ethanol and does not leave persistent residues on treated commodities.

Can ethyl formate be shipped as a flammable liquid?
Yes, but only under UN 1190, Class 3, Packing Group II requirements, with fireproof storage and segregation from strong oxidizers.
