Introduction

Zinc pyrithione, also known as zinc pyrithione, zinc pyrithionium, and zinc omedin, is a zinc complex that was synthesized and used as a topical antifungal or antibacterial agent as early as the 1930s. It is a white to yellow crystalline powder at room temperature. Slightly characteristic odor. not soluble in water. Zinc pyrithione forms insoluble precipitates with cationic and nonionic surfactants, is unstable to light and oxidizing agents, and is unstable to acids and bases at higher temperatures. It is incompatible with EDTA and is partially inactivated by nonionic surfactants. In the presence of heavy metals, chelation or dechelation occurs, and these chelates are poorly soluble in water.
EEC and GB7916-87 stipulate that the maximum allowable mass fraction of zinc pyrithione in cosmetics is 0.5%, which is only used in products that are washed away after use. A concentration of 250-1000mg/kg (active substance) can be used in gels, creams, lotions, dusting powders and anti-dandruff shampoos, as well as in deodorant and disinfectant products.
