Introduction

Isophthalic acid (IPA for short), also known as 1,3-phthalic acid or isophthalic acid, has strong heat resistance, hydrolysis resistance and chemical resistance, and can undergo salt formation, dehydration, hydrogenation, halogenation, etc. The largest use of the reaction is as an intermediate Chemicalbook for the production of unsaturated polyester resins, followed by the manufacture of polyester resins, alkyd resins (mainly used for paint manufacturing) and printing inks. In addition, it can also be used to strengthen plastics and packaging, to manufacture film couplers, coatings and polyester fiber dyeing modifiers, as well as medicines, etc., and has broad prospects for development and utilization.

Crystallized from water or ethanol, it is colorless crystal. Slightly soluble in water, insoluble in benzene, toluene and petroleum ether, soluble in methanol, ethanol, acetone and glacial acetic acid.

Use

●  It is used in the production of alkyd resins, unsaturated polyester resins and other polymers and plasticizers.
●  Used as chromatographic analysis reagent, also used in organic synthesis

Production method

In industry, meta-xylene is used as raw material, cobalt acetate is used as catalyst, acetaldehyde is used as promoter, and acetic acid is used as solvent, and isophthalic acid is obtained by liquid-phase oxidation at a low temperature of 120 °C under a pressure of about 0.6 MPa. Raw material consumption quota: m-xylene (≥95%) 900kg/t, Chemicalbook acetaldehyde (≥96%) 600kg/t, acetic acid (≥96%) 500kg/t, cobalt acetate (≥98%) 25kg/t. In addition, the hydrolysis of isophthalonitrile, or the oxidation of meta-xylene with potassium permanganate is also an industrially adopted method for the production of isophthalic acid.
