Introduction

Benzyl alcohol, also known as benzyl alcohol, has a molecular formula of C6H5CH2OH and a density of 1.045 g/mL at 25 °C (lit.). It is the simplest aliphatic alcohol containing a phenyl group, which can be regarded as benzene substituted with hydroxymethyl, or phenyl substituted of methanol. It is a colorless transparent viscous liquid with a faint aromatic smell. Sometimes benzyl alcohol will have a bitter almond smell of benzaldehyde after being oxidized for a long time. Polarity, low toxicity, low vapor pressure, so it is used as alcohol solvent. combustible. Slightly soluble in water (about 1 g of benzyl alcohol can be dissolved in 25 ml of water), miscible with organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, benzene, and chloroform.

Colorless transparent liquid. Slightly aromatic smell. Slightly soluble in water, miscible with ethanol, ether, chloroform, etc.

Use

●  Used as raw materials and fixatives for spices, pharmaceutical raw materials and anesthetics, preservatives, dyeing auxiliaries, solvents for paints and inks, and used to make ballpoint pen oil

●  Used as a chromatographic analysis reagent, also used in organic synthesis

●  Used in the preparation of floral oils and medicines, etc., also used as solvents and fixatives for fragrances

●  It exists in many fragrant flower essential oils, so it can be used as a blending agent with benzyl acetate in jasmine, gardenia, lilac, ylang-ylang, tuberose, hyacinth, acacia and other floral fragrance types, and has a fragrance-fixing effect. It is also often used as a solvent to dissolve artificial musk and other spices, and is also often used as edible flavors in food flavors such as cherries, grapes, honey, sweet orange, raspberry, walnuts, and vanilla beans.

●  Benzyl alcohol is a food flavor that is temporarily allowed to be used in my country. It is mainly used in fruit flavors such as almonds, sweet oranges, cherries, grapes, and strawberries. The dosage is according to normal production needs, generally 1200mg/kg in chewing gum; 220mg/kg in baked food; 160mg/kg in cold drink; 47mg/kg in candy; 15mg/kg in soft drink.

●  Benzyl alcohol is a very useful fixative, and it is an indispensable spice when blending jasmine, moonshine, ylang ylang and other fragrances. For the preparation of soap, daily cosmetic essence. However, benzyl alcohol can be oxidized slowly and naturally, and a part of it will form benzaldehyde and benzyl ether, which makes the commercially available products often have an almond fragrance, so it is not suitable for long-term storage. Benzyl alcohol is widely used in the production of industrial chemicals. Used in paint solvents, photographic developers, polyvinyl chloride stabilizers, medicines, synthetic resin solvents, solvents for vitamin B injections, preservatives for ointments or liquid medicines. It can be used as a desiccant for nylon filaments, fibers and plastic films, a solvent for dyes, cellulose esters, and casein, and an intermediate for preparing benzyl esters or ethers. At the same time, it is widely used in pen making (ballpoint pen oil), paint solvent, etc.

●  GB 2760--1996 stipulates that it is a food spice that is allowed to be used temporarily. It is also a fixative and grease solvent. As a spice, it is mainly used to prepare flavors such as berries and nuts.

●  Organic synthesis, solvent for gelatin, casein (when hot), cellulose acetate and shellac, etc., embedding material for microscope, measuring vitamin B12 content.

Production method

●  Benzyl chloride and potassium carbonate or sodium carbonate obtained by heating and hydrolyzing for a long time.
It is obtained by reacting methanol solution of benzaldehyde with sodium hydroxide solution at 65-75°C. The finished product has high purity.

●  It is obtained by heating and hydrolyzing benzyl chloride as raw material under the catalysis of alkali. Specifications of spice grade benzyl alcohol (QB792-81): Relative density 1.041-1.046, Refractive index 1.538-1.541, Boiling range 203-206°C Distillation volume over 95%, Solubility fully soluble in 30 times the capacity of distilled water, containing Alcohol content ≥ 98%, chlorine test (N.F) is a side reaction. Raw material consumption quota: benzyl chloride 1600kg/t, soda ash 1000kg/t.

●  Benzyl alcohol naturally exists in orange blossom, ylang-ylang, jasmine, gardenia, acacia, lilac, and hyacinth, and is industrially prepared from benzyl chloride or benzaldehyde.
Add benzyl chloride to 12% soda ash solution, heat to 93°C and stir for 5h, then raise the temperature to 101-103°C to continue the reaction for 10h. After the reaction is completed, cool to room temperature, add salt to saturation, let stand to separate layers, take the upper liquid and distill under normal pressure to obtain a crude product, and then refine it to obtain a finished product. Yield 70%~72%.
C6H5CH2Cl+H2O[Na2CO3]→C6H5CH2OH+NaCl+CO2↑
In the presence of sodium hydroxide, formaldehyde and benzaldehyde are disproportionated to prepare benzyl alcohol.
