Introduction

Zinc sulfate (English zinc sulfate; white vitriol), also known as Hao alum, zinc alum, is colorless or white orthorhombic crystal or powder at room temperature, has astringency, easily soluble in water, the aqueous solution is acidic, slightly soluble in ethanol and glycerol . Pure zinc sulfate does not turn yellow when stored in the air for a long time, and loses water in dry air to form a white powder. There are many kinds of hydrates: the stable hydrate in equilibrium with water in the range of 0-39 ℃ is zinc sulfate heptahydrate, the temperature of 39-60 ℃ is zinc sulfate hexahydrate, and the temperature of 60-100 ℃ is zinc sulfate monohydrate. When heated to 280°C, various hydrates completely lose crystal water, decompose into zinc oxysulfate at 680°C, further decompose above 750°C, and finally decompose into zinc oxide and sulfur trioxide at around 930°C. ZnSO4·7H2O and MSO4·7H2O (M = Mg, Fe, Mn, Co, Ni) form mixed crystals within a certain range.

Zinc sulfate, chemical formula ZnSO4, colorless orthorhombic crystal, relative density is 3.54. Heated to 770 ° C to decompose into zinc oxide. Hydrate zinc sulfate monohydrate ZnSO4·H2O, white powdery crystal, relative density of 3.31, heated to 280 ℃ to lose water to become anhydrous; zinc sulfate hexahydrate ZnSO4·6H2O, colorless monoclinic or tetragonal crystal, relative density of 2.07, heated to 70 ℃ to lose 5 crystal waters to become zinc sulfate monohydrate; zinc sulfate heptahydrate ZnSO4 7H2O, commonly known as Hao alum, zinc alum, is the most common one, colorless orthorhombic crystal or white crystal powder, in Gradually weathering in dry air, the relative density is 1.96, and 1 crystal water is lost at 39 °C to become zinc sulfate hexahydrate. Zinc sulfate is easily soluble in water, the aqueous solution is weakly acidic, soluble in glycerol, slightly soluble in ethanol, and forms ZnSO4·K2SO4·6H2O type double salt with potassium sulfate. Dissolving metallic zinc or zinc oxide in dilute sulfuric acid, concentrating and crystallizing at 30°C can obtain zinc sulfate heptahydrate, and then raising the temperature to obtain various other zinc sulfates.

●  Used as printing and dyeing mordant, wood preservative, paper bleaching agent, also used in medicine, rayon, electrolysis, electroplating, pesticide and production of zinc salt, etc.

●  Zinc sulfate is mainly used as a raw material for the preparation of pigment lithopone, zinc barium white and other zinc compounds. It is also used as a nutrient when animals are deficient in zinc, animal husbandry feed additives, zinc fertilizer (trace element fertilizer) for crops, and artificial fibers. It is an important material for electrolytic production of metal zinc, mordant in the textile industry, medical emetic, astringent, fungicide, wood and leather preservatives, etc. It is obtained by the action of zinc or zinc oxide and sulfuric acid or by extraction and refining of sphalerite after baking in a reverberatory furnace.

●  Zinc or zinc oxide forms zinc sulfate when dissolved in sulfuric acid:
Zn+H2SO4→ZnSO4+H2
Crude zinc sulfate can also be obtained by roasting zinc sulfide (sphalerite) in air:
ZnS+2O2→ZnSO4
The replacement reaction between zinc and inactive metal sulfate (such as copper sulfate) solution can also generate zinc sulfate:
Zn+CuSO4→ZnSO4+Cu
