Samarium sulfate octahydrate is a pale yellow crystal, soluble in water, and loses 3 molecules of crystal water when heated to 105 °C, loses all water molecules at 450 °C, and decomposes into oxides at about 1000 °C. Samarium sulfate octahydrate is chemically stable and can be mixed with alkali metal salt solutions to form insoluble double salts.
