● Lithium sulfide is an inorganic salt compound used as a potential electrolyte material in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.
● Preparation of lithium sulfide: put sulfur powder into a tetrahydrofuran solution containing lithium triethylborohydride, and after sufficient reaction, separate the solid powder from the liquid to obtain it.
● By direct compounding of simple substances, that is, mixing stoichiometric amounts of lithium and sulfur, heating to melting in a nickel crucible under an inert atmosphere (argon or helium), and then forming a homogeneous melt.
Lithium sulfate can also be reduced with carbon powder.
A mixture of 100g lithium sulfate and 436g carbon powder was taken and heated in an electric furnace to form a homogeneous melt.
This product is easily soluble in water, and forms lithium hydroxide and lithium hydrosulfide in the aqueous solution, which is strongly alkaline:
Li2S+H2OLiOH+LiHS
Hydrochloric acid and lithium sulfide react rapidly when cold to generate hydrogen sulfide and lithium chloride:
Li2S+HClLiCl+2H2S
